There’s a banner atop the roof two houses over
Blue plastic sheeting gently waving in the wind
Today I hear no workmen cowering undercover
Constructing a palace they’ll never get to live in

And the living tell the dead of hotter days ahead
But the dead never answer to anything that’s said
Should autumn come later and winters grow greater
Why shouldn’t there be an early spring?

There’s a dude down in Texas an amateur forecaster
Who saw old people in cities afraid of the skies
And my thoughts turn to him when I hear of disaster
and all who would drape long emergencies in lies

Picture a woman walking in snow
with a loaded long gun at her side
Mocking worldly warmth another notch
Picture a man in that gun’s chamber
begging that warmth back with a wish
that will never be answered on his watch
