Alone But Not Lonely
03:17
|
|||
The wind is in from the south or the west
Whistling as if it will give me no rest
I tell it, take a number, stand in line
Under a sign: not all that’s on my mind
Did you make the move
or did the move make you
alone but not lonely
Well at least I’m not the only
It could have been twice or maybe once
Perhaps it’s been weeks or possibly months
Still my thoughts shuffle back to you
Reliving the moment you said that we were through

Close As We Are
04:40
|
|||
Look around and see
It’s only you it’s only me
Take me in with your eyes
Take me into your arms
Tell me you can’t believe it’s real
Then tell me how good it feels
Close as we are underneath these stars
You’ll only hurt me if I let you or make you
Close as we are underneath these stars
You can come forsake me as l forsake you
Now that you see us move
I hope it’s giving living proof
So take me in with your nerves
Take me in as you and I deserve
Show me how heavy your crown
Then show me how you lay it down

Don't Pout
03:00
|
|||
I drove past the reservoir twice over
east to the highway then westward home
Could’ve sworn the water looked lower
I’m supposed to keep my eyes on the road
No, your honor, I was completely sober
Maybe the landscape was speaking in code
Without a doubt it’s the shadow of a drought
Without a doubt it’s a championless title bout
lace up your shoes when you see the waves go out
I woke up during perfectly good sleep
up to the restroom then back under sheets
Could’ve sworn the skies looked creepier
pecked and peered seeking relevant tweets
better a looker for panic before a leaper
when running out of time one needs them deets
Without a doubt it’s the shadow of a drought
Without a doubt it’s a championless title bout
weep if necessary but for heavens sake don’t pout

Face Value
05:20
|
|||
The words were glowing in your mouth,
burning against our ears as you spoke aloud
Un-recallable as missiles shooting out
across a sky leaving trails long and proud
You picked me
like a flower from a field
Then you picked me like a lock
when I told you how I feel
you wouldn’t take a word
I said at face value
I'm grateful for the beauty
that we conjured into being
No matter how long it may last
no matter how fleeting
Even just a moment of your life
through the eyes I see with
It's still irrefutable and
indisputable without repeating
We haven't slept in the same bed for a week
but you're still there when I stretch out flat
stealing covers from me until things peek
feeling several levels of cold and all that

Infidelities
03:32
|
|||
We’re breaking up and that’s all right
we’re made for regular reassembly
so long as we spend a few nights apart
we can still play Red Rocks or Wembley
We’re breaking up but in our defense
we’re overdue for new formats
I’ve tired of how you talk nonsense
and you’re done with being a doormat
We pass some heavenly body
Gravity exerts relentless power
perhaps with a glance at a party
leading toward an untoward encounter
We have our built-in tolerances
we sublimate until they surpass specs
we rid our wreckage of resonances
and reunite over routine makeup sex
We can count on these infidelities
leaving us emotionally physically spent
It never takes a week for our technique
to remember what our love always meant

Main Drag
03:42
|
|||
You pinged me from out in the ether
Yeah, yeah, me too, uh uh, me neither
so we went walking along the main drag
all its bitmaps render mightily faded
pavement under footfalls slightly degraded
as we went walking along the main drag
Once we were kids before time took its toll
in our helmets, we’d hold hands and stroll
under digital skies, ignoring ads in clouds
Now we’ve aged out of key demographics
with memories that can’t handle the haptics
we lose certainties as we drift toward doubts
You pinged me from out in the ether
Yeah, yeah, me too, uh uh, me neither
so we went walking along the main drag
Our avatars appear crude and repugnant
but at least they still let us out in public
so we went walking along the main drag
We counted our endless numbered cycles
more than three score and ten in bibles
until your hardware or mine won’t reboot
But you and I have our backup plan
when our ones and zeroes kick the can
Real-time rendezvous, a street meet-cute
You’ll smile and say do you come here often
I’ll grin and say no but this sure beats a coffin
so let’s go out walking ona real main drag
We’ll ignore forecasts of floods and flames
Try some eye contact reveal our real names
as we go out walking on a real main drag

More Than The Moon
05:03
|
|||
Clouds come and go more than the moon
Those gauzy golden and silver strands
May sometimes shine to beat the band
Slip across the sky from early until late
Drift into distance and dissipate soon
Clouds come and go more than the moon
Stars spin just beyond outstretched hands
It's established due to habits like looking up
Half empty or full, well who holds the cup
And who says life is rough when it's young
Time turns it smooth as groove and tongue
Stars spin just beyond outstretched hands
Rivers rush banks until they reach the ocean
Displaying their regard for physical propriety
With grandeur until you gander at their impiety
And marvel at the laws that govern their form
And ask how it all got set into perpetual motion
Rivers rush banks until they reach the ocean

Neon Smoke
03:11
|
|||
I like you when you’re around
I love it more when you are not
in your absence every sound
echoes like some reckless pistol shot
You know how to disappear in plain sight
you slip inside a pocket universe that bends light
you’re bright and then gone but your image lingers
like neon smoke against outstretched fingers
I like to see you in your clothes
I love it more when you are not
Instant gratification I suppose
A little bit of it is as good as a lot
I like you walking outside the city
I love it more when you are not
Concrete and glass make you pretty
Horns honking at you ‘cause you’re hot

On The Nose
03:39
|
|||
She said she was trained in philosophy
worn her trainers for ten thousand miles
I said are they broken in and she said she
wasn’t sure so she’d have to consult her files
When you’re walking in these shoes
No matter what direction you’re going
You’re always a few steps closer to home
All I do is listen to these luckforsaken towns
Hoping they don’t listen back too close
So when love and money finally run out
whatever’s next won’t be too on the nose
You don’t need me to know
You are so much more
than how your eyelids close
Tell me what you dreamed about
and I’ll tell you what i think it meant
I said I never was much of a philosopher
Passionate about fashion but no sneakerhead
Long as they fit my feet I never mind the street

Payback Time
04:16
|
|||
How do I know how it's going to go down?
Never seen this neighborhood, this part of town
But I know a little about evening up the odds
And I know a lot about tempting stray gods
The forecast calls for sorrow
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may
Bet against me if you're lucky
Quack if you're feeling ducky
I remember tomorrow
just like it was yesterday
Bet against me if you want to
I'll front you until payback time, okay?
Why's my back protected, my eyes on the exit?
The best muscle, you never need to flex it
I'm down for the cause but I respect causality,
so I'll meet you sooner than later in reality

Picturing Us
03:22
|
|||
The problem I find with picturing us
We’re perfect on paper where we don’t live
Even tempered we don’t holler and cuss
but we can still get it as good as we give
Will we get through escapist escapades?
Will we get to count days up to decades?
The problem you find with picturing us
No form or frame to contain growing pains
No bed no room no tax bracket or census
No forever forecast without weather vanes
Will we dare to play a game of couples’ charades?
Will we share the blame when a good time fades?
If we can love with certainty
Maybe we can live uncertainly

Postcards
03:14
|
|||
Postcards only let you say
so much before you’re out of room
Two or three good sentences
then sorry that will have to do
Write the address add the stamp
send and wish upon the moon
Hope your friend on the other end
who gets it understands
We don’t get to be bards
when we send our postcards
We hide our love like cowards
in between handwritten lines
On the back a pretty picture
chosen to show where you were
so your friend who gets it knows
you got to visit someplace fun
Write the address add the stamp
send and wish upon the moon
Hope your friend on the other end
who gets it understands
To never let down our guards
when we send our postcards
So what could be easy stays hard
in between handwritten lines

Royal Road
04:08
|
|||
We live off the royal road these days
Not that much to look at on its face
you could honestly say much the same
for our time and our place
They used to haul supplies break a sweat
from old Saint Francis up to Sacrament
when a load grew heavy and your horses tired
you could cool your heels beside church fires
Brothels and barrooms bunker side by side
Curbstone to curbstone over a hundred feet wide
North of town you could see cattle stretch their legs
Chew their cud trample mud amid roadside tent pegs
Now it’s all strip malls taquerias and motel signs
No mission bells to mark some foreign king’s design
Travelers can take a bus or steer cars out of town
Residents like us remain behind we’ve settled down

Tabloid Soul
03:23
|
|||
I don’t respect what draws you in
How you return to the open page
How you hold it in your hand is a sin
Let alone let it reflect the time and age
Half tone eyes and skin
Lines in your head scream
Carrying a tabloid soul in
the crease of a paper seam
Some only care for what you write
Long as you produce they won’t judge
Why be insightful if you could incite?
Who’s left in the room to hold a grudge?
Other people give away time and space
Lurid as a meteor against languishing sky
Success means choosing your own pace
How and who and where but never why

The Last War
02:50
|
|||
Love, you're fighting the last war
when it comes to getting all you want from me
Hear what you say and I follow along
but lately I wonder how would it feel to be free
Running from hammers
So afraid you'll get nailed
From within and without
You're assaulted and assailed
I remember how it happened
I could see it like it was front of me
Live and direct televised before my eyes
What was done to you was done to me
When they look up wreckage
I mean the dictionary definition
I had a feeling you and I would be there
But maybe that was just a premonition

Those Memories
03:24
|
|||
You always said the intangibles
had a hold on me hard to detach
Now you’re intangible yourself
in my head like a guttering match
I cup my hand against flickering wind
Wait for the memories to start up again
They cling to me like fog against faraway hills
They sing to me of what could be but never will
You always saw the glass as half-full
If I said half-empty you’d pre-empt me
Who knew our hearts could grow cool,
that in your wake no love might tempt me?
I fasten my coat against the chilly damp
As the memories illuminate me like a lamp

Whisper To A Dream
04:15
|
|||
If I whisper to a dream
Will it come when I call?
Like a cat that doesn’t follow directions,
will it even acknowledge me at all?
I will whisper to my dream
in case it didn’t hear me the first time
Maybe that’s the trick, maybe that’s the key
It's still tricky, still tricky
If you whisper to a dream
First you have to go to sleep, she said
then you lie down, slip out of your skin
hover over the sheets as if you’re dead
There’s a trick to it, there’s a key
There’s a trick to it, a key but
it’s still tricky, very very tricky
