Basically
03:23
|
|||
I asked you out, and when you said yes I knew I'd make a mess, so I told you about this place on the avenues down the boulevard. We'll get there by bus. I'll pay your way, just you and me and us. We'll get it to go, and then we'll bundle up and walk into the fog and snow. I had a good feeling when I told you about riding around back when I was young. I couldn't stop looking at the face you made when you stuck out your tongue. Basically that's when it all fell together for me. Basically that's when I knew, I knew, I knew. Basically, that's when the light came down and I knew I'd never frown, basically, basically, basically, basically, basically, basically.

Lanesplitting
03:35
|
|||
Between you and me
Between the metal boxes
Not much but luck and air
A moment of attention
A miscarriage of intention
One of us may not be there
The law lets both of us
Take up the space as we need
But it's time sets us free
I don't know how to keep on getting
They don't teach the art of lanesplitting
It's not so much a practice as a craft
Less about science much more of a math
Good behind the wheel
Good steering better at fearing
Sitting down becomes obscene
Travel's scary until you try routine
Feel your eyes glued pretty much
Behind one more bumper you can't touch
So I take up the space as I need
A space upon a steely steed

Magic
03:54
|
|||
I didn't leave any room for magic
And that was my first mistake
When you thought everything was fake
Instead of true, what was I to do?
How can I prove my love to you?
How can I show you what's meaningful?
How can I stand up like a stand-up
And perform, leave your heart warm?
I've got to let the rabbit go back in the hat
I've got to show you I'm this and not that
Put away my cape and my wand
Let you know that I'm here and not gone
So before it's too late I'm going to say
Look into my eyes, look into my eyes
You'll see the magic, you'll feel the magic
There will be magic, baby you'll believe the magic

Natural Backdrop
04:06
|
|||
The last time you saw me, I was standing still, focused on my will by the windowsill, looking at the light in the street and the cars below, hoping they could tell me something I didn't already know. I was really in motion, scattering like a leaf; the wind that moved me could be mistaken for grief, but what's one more leaf on the forest floor, who's got use for it anymore? The eye is drawn to the natural backdrop, and it just don't stop.

Not Now
03:48
|
|||
If what I wanted could happen
Then maybe I might be satisfied
But everything bad takes time
And everything good takes longer
Anywhere but here and not now
Anyone but me, not what, no how
Anywhere but here and not now
The past is terrain I am mapping
Much more out of shame than pride
Much less for a reason than I'm
Willing to believe I once was stronger
The future is water that's lapping
At foundations and ankles like a tide
I listen for a distant shimmering chime
Wait to be wrong, hope to be wronger

Paper Plates
03:29
|
|||
I drive whatever moves me
Gets me and mine down the road
Perpetual motion soothes the
Internal inertia that only forebodes
I don't mind the model or makes
Do what it takes to make the model work
Paper plates
You think I got it
Well maybe I did
Only temporary
Till the DMV approves
But until then I'll move it
You drive whatever you can start
Less out of love than what you afford
Turn away from what thrills your heart
Fix your face so it looks like you're bored
You always mind the model and makes
No way to live life for goodness sakes
Paper plates
Flapping in the breeze
Slapping in the frame
Only temporary
Till the state exclaims
My title is in my name

Personal
03:20
|
|||
You dance up on me
You don't respect boundaries
You think you can do as you please
You're gonna think different
You get all up in my space
You don't respect the place
O tempora, o mores!
Well, you're gonna think different
It won't be personal by the time it's over
It won't be personal when we're done
It won't be personal when it's complete
Somebody will have had their fun
That will be true: I wouldn't bet on it being you
You will test me, you will fail
You're caught in the doldrums watching the wind in my sail
I'm riding forward, you're stationing
You'll be forgotten, that's the thing
It won't be personal by the time it's over
It won't be personal when we're done
It won't be personal when it's complete
Somebody will have had their fun
That will be true

Show Me How
03:20
|
|||
You're so wonderful
I'm so dumb-da-dumb-dumb
I want your love
How can I get me some?
When I see you walk,
I lose my ability to talk
How could I let you know
That we ought to go
Together everywhere we can
I want to be your plaything
please say I can
I want you to know
but it's so hard for me to express
You look my way and
suddenly I want to undress
That wouldn't be cool,
but it's just 'cause I'm your fool
you could show me how

Spilling
04:27
|
|||
My drink, my guts
My heart, so what
They all feel filled
Until time for spilling
I scattered my seed
Perchance to breed
But bitter frost killed
No field for the tilling
My grip, my goods
My melancholy moods
Cannot be thrilled
Just as well unwilling
This voice that sings
The pain memory brings
Just my luck they're stuck
Someday they'll be stilling
I'll pay the debts I owe
Or bid leave one day and go
Watch them while I disappear
Meandering and milling

Trouble Is A Word
03:26
|
|||
I'm not trying to be rude but my understanding is that trouble is a word, not a mood. Could you please explain?
I thought you'd been here longer than me, were familiar with protocols, maybe even seen a degree. But now I see you've been faking it all along, your bluff game so strong that it led us to this cliff.
And trouble is a word we use to describe the state of things from following your flings to the precipice, where you were promised bliss and we were promised riches: that was the only thing that was rich.
You don't have the money, you don't have the money! Where did it go, where did it go? We want the money, or at least we want to know.

Where That's Gotten Me
04:37
|
|||
I'm standing out here on the median, watching the cars go by in both directions. I don't remember how I got here, how I wound up with so little protection. I must have followed my nose somehow. Maybe I followed somebody who knows how. Maybe I followed some sense of the wow. Look where that's gotten me now. First, you put one foot in front of the other that's called the stroll. Then you think it might be nice to get somewhere that's called a goal. When you think there's a price to pay and there is, it's a soul. That's how you wound up here. You can't go back. You're too afraid to make a mistake. You've already made more than you can take. You know you can't uncut the cake. It's time to figure out how cuz there's no point in a bow. The curtain remains up. You might as well hold out your cup, let the rain fall and fill it up.
