About Time
03:50
|
|||
The thing about time
is that we think it takes place in order
we think it’s got borders
that it behaves, follows a line,
something we can think of as fine
The thing about time
we treat it like it’s rational,
passionate, like it knows
what we want when it doesn’t.
How can it be expected to
acknowledge beings in
its midst fighting amongst
each other for little scraps of bliss,
something we can think of as fine?

Clocking
02:49
|
|||
Clocking you soon as you walk in
but not saying anything out loud
noticing your second hand spin
a movement too subtle for a crowd
Everything I know isn’t obvious
least of all what I feel in real time
secrets linger longer than trusts
a penny drops more often than a dime
You wouldn’t say what I was thinking
Discretion lets you arrive and depart
So who will say if that was you winking
Not you walking out ahold of my heart

Finite
04:28
|
|||
It’s fine it’s fine it’s fine it’s finite
It will expire it won’t last the whole night
the drink in your hand the tune by the band
the gas in your tank the kindness unthanked
Yes, you get points for showing up
Even more for knowing when to keep your mouth shut
That’s a skill acquired on the job
using your best intentions against a filthy ragged mob
Yes, it’s a gig but it might not be a living
Too little pay for too much effort at a pace unforgiving
so bend your back, pursue this work
sanity won’t set you free, but it’ll keep you from going berserk
It’s fine it’s fine it’s fine it’s finite
the error unfixed betwixt wrong and right
Only things made by humans make mistakes
it’s not only their funerals, it’s also their wakes

Listen Before Burning
03:32
|
|||
You could call the flames by their names
if you knew them but you don’t
and so they burn
You could call the flames by their names
some of us could summon them,
bid them perform our will
Some of us can do it still
but it’s no cheap thrill.
You only know how to set things on fire
and eventually extinguish them
All of this effort, it makes you perspire
and when you expire, it’s the flames
to which you are sent
If you knew how to call the flames
by their names, but you don’t, do you?
And so they see through you
and call out your names
as they come for you
all you’ve got to do
is listen and burn

Louche Lips
03:50
|
|||
Deep heavy foggy morning greets us anew
Smoky wisps blanketing another aimless day
Palms on the horizon fade in and out of view
whether or not we might want them to
The wind won’t pick up until noon
We’ve nowhere to be anytime soon
Close these drapes against escapes
Lower these blinds assume these shapes
You have the rest of your life left for regret
against a chance to let pleasure help you forget
Curl up like cats and keep our own counsel
seek out the sparks against darkness not so dull
like sunken ships giving in to gravity’s pull
as louche lips offer more than a mouthful
We’ve at least an hour or two
before gray gives way to blue
to swim against the tide between
or simply surrender as currents careen

Never Letting Go
02:47
|
|||
There’s a notebook page sitting empty
There’s words in my heart even emptier
There’s everything that ever happened
between us sometimes solid too often a blur
and it’s still happening somewhere
at least some of the scientists insist it’s so
I’m clinging to the concept of never letting go
There’s feelings in my heart I couldn’t say
They steal my peace until I wish I could pray
There’s everything that ever happened
between us never too believable for wonder

Nothing's Eternal
03:27
|
|||
Nothing’s eternal
for that we can thank
every evening’s sponsor
entropy national bank
its slogan’s no reversal
of transactions allowed
with holdings this eternal
even death be not proud
Nothing’s eternal
even the past must fade
No future is promised
except one still unmade
there’ll be no rehearsal
with limelight shining down
on a play unfolding so eternal
anyone may wear the crown
Nothing’s eternal
so beat you bloody hearts
conjoin whatever joy aligns
The stops permit the starts
The symbols yield to signs
The data populates the charts
empty coldness reigns eternal
its blackness reveals the stars

One More Day
04:42
|
|||
When bullets fly
from narrow nests
just like birds
and millk and honey
crystallize and
crumble into curds
and the world’s worries
won’t be weighed down in words
here’s all I know how to do,
here’s what’s gotten me through:
find the joy in the complaint
find the mercy in restraint
find a way out of no way
find the marrow in the bone
find a path to take you home
find peace that’ll keep you
one more day

Only A Moment
03:29
|
|||
We were in the flow together
last forecast said good weather
we were in the flow together
and suddenly we were separated
It was only a moment
until it trapped me
became a predicament
leaving me unhappy
It was only a moment
feeling the way I felt
as if I were somehow clever
I could undeal cards dealt
I went over everything I own
Threaded memory needle sewn
I went over everything I own
and suddenly I got so frustrated
It was only a moment
until it trapped me
became a predicament
leaving me unhappy
I wouldn’t mind never
feeling the way I felt
as if I were somehow clever
I could undeal cards dealt
Did I do something wrong or unfun
a needful thing needing to be undone
Did I send in clouds to douse the warmth of the sun
or send in crowds until you doubted I was the one

Photograph
03:42
|
|||
You wanna be my foes
but I say you’re not worthy
You try to swing them blows
but I say you can’t hurt me
I demand a better class of ruffians
I demand a better class of villains
I demand a better class of enemies
in front of me right now
I got the tools
and the allies
with a side of fries
Let me get the lens right!
I was promised opponents
I was promised worthy foes
to get in my face,
try to show me my place
All you do is make me laugh
hold still, I’m gonna take a photograph
document what people saw right now,
you’re making me raise my brow
Wake me up when the bell rings
wake me up when the lady sings
at the end of the opera
Wake me up when the bell rings
I can’t feel a thing tonight

This Is It
03:57
|
|||
They tell you to be mindful
they suggest you stay present
then offer you nothing but
a life you’re bound to resent
till you think of resigning or
just flipping over the board
or if asking for a hard reboot
is a thing you can even afford
I could tell you about the good old days
but in a lot of ways I’m afraid to say this is it
The months and years will fade like cheers
from the first time you hear me say this is it
They say your life’s your own
but offer no worthwhile contract
only lies up to their eyes unless
you insist on one pure true fact
You think of a quiet life somewhere
in the remotest of boondocks
beyond and behind a nice high wall
with provisions and strong locks
Look for love in your mirror
after spraying glass cleaner
or out your own window if
you’ve got one that gets any sun
it’ll be worth all the trouble
be it blood or sweaty puddles
help somebody, because if
there’s any point it’s the only one

Tough Breaks
03:17
|
|||
They wave me out of the spotlight
They say it’s not about my age
or any unexpected expectation
only that it’s time to turn a page
I was hoping for some kind of
extra life beyond my closing day
a little credit or compensation
for tough breaks along the way
They say participants can be disinvited
and I’m not supposed to feel slighted
but to leave a room without remuneration
I wish the process left me more excited
Maybe it’s relationships left behind
maybe it’s relief from an endless grind
I’ll ponder it until my final exhalation
if it was ever anything for me to find

Watch The Clock
04:10
|
|||
You can watch the clock tick
You can swipe you can flick
at its second hand swinging
from a central axis winging
round and round it’s flinging
almost as if it were singing
in an arc thus circumscribed
preordained and inscribed
Make a meal out of each second in fact
You can watch the clock or you can act
We believe in obligations
we believe in borders and nations
distract ourselvs with fictions
You can watch the clock run
or turn instead toward the sun
It keeps time so differently
as it shines down for all to see
At sunset, you can choose a star
to glow like cinders, to burn and scar
fiery circles tracking round you high above
You can watch the clock or you can love
We’ve all got time until we don’t
we all use time but all of us won’t
We believe in obligations
we believe in borders and nations
every fiction until we face the truth
we believe in obligations
distract ourselvs with fictions
till we face the truth
there’s only time
nothing but time

Yearbook
03:56
|
|||
If the year was a book
I would batter it in a totebag
Toss it on the ground let it drag
if it was mine to read at anytime
If the year was a book
I would search for recipes to cook
footnotes for ingredients in need
Leaves and flesh spice and seed
If the year was a book
I’d hope it would come illustrated
maybe overrated by
critics from the future
If the year was a book
I would write a dedication inside
I would fill it up with
a little pride as if it was mine
If the year was a book
like the ones they hand out
at the end of school, I’d look
inside for rules, cut out pictures of fools
If the year was a book
I wonder if I could trust myself
find a way to put it on a shelf
for someone to discover anew
maybe you, maybe you
